How To Make a USB Flash Drive Into a Shared Storage Across Your Network Use to Transfer Files

22 Apr

Transferring files from one computer to another can sometimes be a hassle. One method is to physically insert a USB flash drive into the computer with the data that they want then transfer that data to the USB drive. After that data is transferred, that person will have to physically remove that flash drive and insert it into the computer that they want the data transferred to. Other methods also exist for transferring data from one device to another, such as using cloud services. In this post, I will use the method of using a USB flash drive and a wireless router. I personally feel that this is most convenient, especially in the home.

Depending on the router that you have, you might have to make changes in the router settings. Not all routers need the settings changed. For example, my router did not need the settings changed in the menu in order for the USB drive to work with the router. Not all routers are the same, so you would have to check and make sure what you need in order to allow the USB flash drive to work with your router.

If you’re router needs the settings changed, you will have to enter your router settings menu. You will need to open a web browser and enter the local IP address of your router. The default router IP address is 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 depending on your router. To make sure you have the right router IP address, you can look up the default IP address online by doing a quick google search on your particular router.

Enter the Router IP Address Into a Web Browser To Enter Your Router Settings

Like I mentioned earlier, I did not have to go into my router settings to allow the USB drive to work with my router. My router had the default settings, which allowed me to do what I wanted. My router did have additional features regarding the USB flash drive and router shared storage, but I did not need to use the additional features.

For Windows 10, I had to go to the start menu and search and click on the run command. In the run command prompt, I typed in \\192.168.1.1. Check and make sure what your router IP address is, so you can enter the correct one. Once you type in the IP address, a window will appear showing you the USB drive, which is connected to the router.
