“No Bootable Device Found” is an error message that may be confusing, especially if you know that a hard drive is inside of the computer. You might have even used the computer the other day, and all of a sudden the computer is turned on today and this error message appears.
The cause of a “No Bootable Device Found” can be caused by multiple reasons. One reason can be that the hard drive itself is not functioning properly and the computer simply needs a new one. This was actually the case that happened with me when performing repairs on this one particular computer. The second reason can be caused by the motherboard not functioning properly. If this is the reason for the error message, then the motherboard needs to be replaced or repaired. Another reason can be that there is no operating system installed.
A quick and easy way to test if the hard drive is at fault is to simple get a known good working hard drive and install it in the system. Then press the F2 key upon power on, then check if the hard drive is detected in the BIOS. Another way to check for hard drive functionality is to press the F12 key upon power on and run the hard drive diagnostics test. If the hard drive diagnostics test passes, then it’s safe to say that the hard drive is is good working order. There are some exceptions where all tests may pass, and the hard drive is at fault. In most cases swaping out the hard drive with a known good hard drive and using the diagnostics test and BIOS check is a good way to check for any hard drive faults.
On a side note, the F2 and F12 keys are used for Dell computer. Different brands of computers may have a different key combination to enter the BIOS.
